Toronto Pearson Air Canada Dixie Road Spotting

Watch women’s soccer or walk around the corner to do a little plane spotting? Easy pick. With the game at the northeast corner of Dixie and Derry in Brampton (or maybe Mississauga – I’m not even sure that the municipal governments know where the border between the two cities in the Greater Toronto Area is) it was a short walk over to the end of Runway 05/23 on Dixie Road.

There was nothing much more than domestic airliners belonging to Westjet and Air Canada. However, there was an interesting Cessna from FedEx and a Airbus 330 belonging to KLM that was inbound from Amsterdam. However, the location is spectacular for watching landings. For more images from this session of plane spotting, check out this more detailed article at Its About Travelling: Toronto Pearson Planespotting.

It used to be that cars would be parking along the shoulder of this stretch of the road with the pavement of the runway just a very short distance away. With the perceived security concerns of the last decade or so and the expansion of Dixie to a six lane road, parking at the side of the road here is now vigilantly outlawed. However, if you park a block away at the Wendy’s / Tim Horton’s, you can walk over and stand beneath the runway lights without hassle.

At this point, the planes are flying so low overhead that even a Embraer ERJ-190 can be deafening. It would be magic to see a Boeing 747 or Airbus A380 drop in from here.

By the way, if you’re a jet I.D. expert and can tell me what the plane in the image is, please put it in the comments. I have been an airplane addict since a young age but quite frankly have a hard time identifying the difference between two engine planes. Typically, I capture the tail number in at least one image and can go to one of the many online sites to positively identify the airplane. However, for this Air Canada jet, I was so directly underneath that I didn’t capture any info – barely was the tail logo captured…
