Overlooked In A City Full Of History

The city of Stratford, Ontario, Canada is known worldwide for its theatre festival. Its city hall was completed in 1900 and has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada since 1976. The festival theatre and the downtown core are lined with tourists during the festival season (aka spring, summer and fall).

But, few make the trek a few blocks away from the downtown to see another designated historic site.

The Stratford Train Station was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1988 and as a Heritage Railway Station in 1993. The building was originally under the ownership of the Grand Trunk Railway. GTR merged with the Canadian National Railway in 1920.

This station is much larger than the typical vintage Ontario train station. It was once even grander with a tower atop the main building and a roof over the tracks. Those have since been removed.

Stratford, Ontario

The city of Stratford is bigger than its population suggests. With just over 30,000 residents, it was first incorporated as a city back in 1886. Many locales in the province with higher populations still have the ‘town’ classification.

The downtown core thrives and is fed by the influx of tourists visiting during festival season. The Stratford Festival first began in 1953. At that time, this was mostly a railroad town. Grand Trunk, and CNR after, had their engine repair shops located here. Those shops closed in 1964.
