CN Rail Tracks In Georgetown, Ontario

georgetown ontario via rail

Looking west down the CN Rail tracks in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. The VIA Rail / GO Train station in Georgetown is a bit of an unknown treasure for trainspotting in the area around Toronto. There is a no-fee parking area that always seems to have open spaces. There is no fence or barrier of any kind between that parking lot and the tracks.

We stopped in recently on a visit to Rockwood Conservation Area in nearby Rockwood, Ontario. These are towns lined up along the heavily populated highway seven. Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area are to the east while Acton falls between Georgetown and Rockwood with Guelph, Kitchener and Stratford to the west.

Rockwood is an excellent spot for a day trip for anyone living in or visiting the GTA. Features include rocky cliffs, glacial potholes, remnants of a woolen mill and some of the most extensive caves in the province of Ontario. Camping is also available at Rockwood. However, this is a busy place on weekends. If you don’t like crowds, it’s best to visit during the week and outside of the core months of July and August if possible.

If you need a break from the camping, you can always head down the road (Guelph Line) a short ways to visit the Halton County Radial Railway. This is an excellent attraction for the family with history mixed with the fun of riding restored streetcars along a one kilometre track into the woods.

The video below was taken at the Georgetown VIA Rail Station. This is a decent sized CN freight train coming from the west and heading east into Toronto.
